1st.and 2st. of May 2004
DATELINE 21st April 2004
PRESS RELEASE.... IMMEDIATE
START....
RADIO HANDSHAKE OF WELCOME.
As part of the Day of Welcomes to celebrate the enlargement of the European
Union on the 1st. of May, Amateur Radio operators will man stations in each
of the twinned Irish towns and cities and establish radio contact with their
counterparts in the new member states of the EU.
This celebration of kinship and unity by means of a ‘radio handshake’ will link
cities and towns, villages and councils, schools and youth groups across the
new European states with our local celebrations.
Locally....
An amateur radio station will be operated on the Millenium Plaza on the Quay in Waterford by South Eastern Amateur Radio Group on the 1st of May. As Waterford is twinned with Malta for the event, our efforts will be concentrated on making contacts with Malta but it is envisaged that we will make radio contacts worldwide using voice and Morse code as a means of communication. A number of members from the group will man and operate the station from Noon until 6.00 p.m. The station will use the callsign EI25ML. EI is the prefix that denotes an Irish station, 25 represents the number of EU countries and ML represents Malta, the country with which Waterford is twinned.
The event in Waterford will take place as part of the Waterford Spraoi Festivities, which will be run in conjunction with the EU enlargement.
The station will continue to run from a private location for the remainder of the weekend.

We would like to thank Waterford Spraoi for their assistance in organising the station.

Additional background information;
Amateur Radio Stations to link Twinned Cities and Towns.
On the 1st and 2nd May 2004, the Irish Radio Transmitters Society (IRTS) is hosting an event on the international airwaves as part of the celebrations to mark the Enlargement of the European Union. Over 5000 radio operators from the existing and new member states and indeed, other countries of the world, are expected to participate
Starting at noon on the 1st May, and continuing for 36 hours, amateur radio operators, licensed by their own national licensing authority, will make radio contact and exchange greetings with as many of their fellow operators in the new Union, and beyond, as possible. The leading stations can be expected to contact upwards of 2500 other stations within the 36 hours, making this a real ‘people’ event and a celebration of kinship and unity by means of a ‘radio’ handshake.
As part of the EU Enlargement celebrations, the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr. John O’Donoghue T.D. has designated ten Irish cities and towns to be twinned with a particular new member state. The Minister for Europe, Mr. Dick Roche T.D. has specifically requested that the IRTS event would have a significant input into the twinning element. It is intended that in each of these cities and towns an Amateur Radio station be set up by the local Radio Clubs. These stations will be licensed by ComReg and will operate on internationally agreed radio frequencies. These stations will be able to communicate directly with thousands of Amateur Radio stations in their twinned state and indeed other member states and beyond.
The Amateur Radio station in your town or city will be able to provide a real and vivid link to stations located throughout your twinned country. Much promotion work has already been carried out in the twinned country, and we know that many villages towns and cities there are organising Amateur Radio event stations in order to make the ‘radio handshake’. In addition hundreds of individual radio operators in that country will also be attempting to contact Irish stations to exchange greetings.
It is envisaged that the Amateur Radio station will be an active ingredient in the celebrations over the weekend. From our experience in running such events in the past, we believe that the station will be of particular interest to the Press, especially Press from the twinned country, visiting dignitaries, youth groups, schools etc.
The IRTS contact person for the event nationally is Paul Martin. Please feel free to contact him at any time as follows.
