EU Radio
The EURadio special event is organised by the
IRTS
to mark the enlargement
of the European Union by welcoming 10 new member states over the weekend
of the 1st and 2nd of May 2004. Ten Irish towns
and cities were twinned with a new EU member state and a special event
station operated from each of the twinned towns using the callsign beginning
EI25 and a suffix denoting the twinned state.
Here in Waterford which was twinned with Malta for the Weekend of Welcomes, we operated the station EI25ML from the Dome on the Millennium Plaza in Waterford City (right). The event was organised as part of the Waterford Spraoi festivities which took place in the city during the weekend of welcomes. Our thanks go out to the Spraoi organisers for their assistance in making the event possible.
The operation required a great deal of organisation, which paid off in
the end as "pile-ups" were experienced on 40 and 20 metres during the
event which gave us a high QSO count.
Operation resumed on the Sunday from Waterford city and Donnells Hill, Portlaw, Co. Waterford (just a few miles from the city). Again, this was another successful operation with operators working a 3 hour pile-up on 20 metres.
