JOTA

JOTA

Presentation JOTA (Jamboree On The Air) is a world-wide annual scouting event which brings together Scouts and Guides from all around the world via amateur radio.

On Saturday the 18th of October 2003, the 15th / 25th Waterford Scout Unit, in conjunction with SEARG, hosted 57 Cubs / Macaoimh & Scouts from Waterford City and County, at the amateur radio station (EI2WRC/J) set up in the Scout Den at the top of The Folly / John's Hill, where the young people took part in the 46th Annual Jamboree on the Air (JOTA).

In 2004 the 8th Waterford (Tramore) Scout Unit hosted the 47th JOTA station using the call-sign EI2SJW. The 2 metre (VHF) operations took advantage of the IRLP node on the EI7MLR repeater and those who attended were able to speak with their counterparts in other Irish locations, the UK, USA, Europe and Australia. A couple of scouts also availed of the opportunity to speak with the Chief Scout at EI1NCSJ in the Helix, DCU which was the venue for the inaugural National Council of Scouting Ireland, formed at the beginning of 2004. The station was also in regular communication with (Mellary Scout Centre) in West Waterford.

Chief On October the 15th 2005 we ran the station from the 1st Port of Waterford Sea Scouts in Waterford City for the 48th annual Jamboree On The Air. The call-sign was EI6SI. Again this was a very successful JOTA with operation on VHF, HF and APRS. John (EI7IG) also demonstrated satellite operation at the event.
